The Divine Esse

III. The Divine Esse (Jehovah)
(God as Being Itself, Life Itself, and the Source of All That Is)

1. Doctrinal Core
God’s essential being (Esse) is Jehovah, and that Jehovah means “He Is” or “Being Itself.” God is not a being among other beings, but the very reality of being and life from which all finite things exist.
Because God is Esse itself:

  • all created things exist from Him,
  • nothing exists from itself,
  • and God alone truly is.

True doctrine further asserts that this Divine Esse is infinite, eternal, uncreated, and indivisible, and that everything else exists only by continual dependence upon it.

2. The Literal Message of the Word
True doctrine teaches:

  • God does not just have existence - He is existence.
  • Everything else exists only because it receives being and life from God.
  • God’s name “Jehovah” means “I Am” or “He Who Is.”
  • Nothing created exists on its own, even for a moment.

In short:
God is the source of all existence and life, and everything that exists depends on Him at every moment.

3. Spiritual Message of the Word
Spiritually, true doctrine reveals that:

  • all life in heaven flows continuously from the Lord,
  • angels perceive that they live from God, not of themselves,
  • and any sense of self-derived life would sever them from heaven.

Because God is Esse itself:

  • Divine love is the source of all affection,
  • Divine wisdom is the source of all truth,
  • and all order depends on unbroken reception from the Divine.

This continuous influx is what keeps heaven alive, unified, and joyful.

4. Psychological Meaning
Psychologically, the doctrine of Divine Esse teaches that:

  • human beings are receivers, not originators, of life,
  • the feeling of “self-life” is an appearance necessary for freedom,
  • but believing oneself to be the source of good and truth leads to disorder.

A healthy mind recognizes:

  • dependence without passivity,
  • humility without loss of agency,
  • and responsibility without self-exaltation.

The illusion of self-derived life produces pride, anxiety, and control; recognition of received life produces peace and coherence.

5. Regenerative Process
(What changes in a person over time)
In regeneration, true doctrine works by:

  • Putting off:
    • the belief that one is the source of goodness,
    • the need to claim merit,
    • the fear of losing control if dependence is acknowledged.
  • Putting on:
    • trust in Divine providence,
    • willingness to act while acknowledging God as the source,
    • gratitude rather than self-assertion.

This shift is slow because:

  • selfhood clings to ownership,
  • the appearance of self-life feels real,
  • and humility must be freely chosen.

6. Daily Life Application
(How true doctrine lives in practice)
In everyday life, acknowledging Divine Esse means:

  • acting responsibly while giving credit inwardly to the Lord,
  • resisting the urge to dominate outcomes,
  • accepting limitations without despair,
  • and viewing success as stewardship rather than possession.

It changes how one:

  • handles achievement,
  • responds to failure,
  • treats others,
  • and understands usefulness.

7. Common Misunderstandings Corrected
(What true doctrine is NOT saying)
Being a Christian does not mean:

  • that human effort is meaningless,
  • that people are passive instruments,
  • that individuality is erased,
  • or that responsibility is removed.

It does reject:

  • self-derived righteousness,
  • merit-based salvation,
  • and the belief that goodness originates in the human will.

8. Doctrinal Connections
True doctrine governs:

  • Divine Love and Wisdom  - attributes of Esse in expression
  • Creation  - finite existence from infinite Being
  • Providence  - continual dependence, not past creation only
  • Regeneration  - reordering reception of life
  • Faith and Charity  - acknowledgment of source
  • The Lord  - Jehovah made visible and approachable

Without Divine Esse, all attributes become abstractions.

9. In Short:
Jehovah is Being itself and Life itself, the source from which all things exist and live. Nothing has life from itself, and nothing stands apart from continual dependence on God. Recognizing this restores humility, order, and peace to both heaven and the human mind.
